Little French Bulldog Scares off 3 Bears [Video]

Jules may weigh only 20 pounds, but that didn’t stop the feisty French Bulldog from chasing three bears away from her family’s home in Monrovia, Calif., Friday afternoon.

“She wasn’t having it. You’re not coming into her property,” her dog dad, David Hernandez, told CBS Los Angeles.

“She blew me away. I couldn’t believe that she turned into a wolverine.”

Two young bears entered the Hernandez family’s front yard, while the mama bear climbed onto a balcony. Because of the California drought and a recent wildfire, bears have increasingly been leaving the San Gabriel Mountains to scavenge for food in hillside neighborhoods.

Surveillance videos captured Jules racing down the porch steps and jumping toward one of the bears. As that bear stands and pushes Jules away, the little dog jumps at the other bear. In another video, a bear can be seen scrambling to make a quick exit over a fence as Jules chased it.

Jules was given a special treat, extra kisses and a bath. (The best reward would be for the Hernandez family to ensure this is Jules’ first and last bear encounter.)

While Hernandez has taken precautions to keep bears away from his home, he said some of his neighbors have been leaving dog food out for them, and one woman even makes meatloaf for them. Feeding the starving bears may seem kind hearted but is actually a bad idea and against the law.

Hernandez said he feels safer in bear country than in the city.

“You could have drive-bys or you can have bears,” he told CBS Los Angeles. “What’s it going to be? For me I’ll choose the wildlife, but just don’t feed them.”

It’s not unusual for little dogs to scare off much larger wildlife. In August, a Jack Russell Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier made headlines when the little dogs chased away grizzly and black bears.

Tattletale Bullmastiff Points Out TP Perpetrator in Viral Video

When his dog mom asks Turner, a Bullmastiff, who left toilet paper all over the floor — and wrapped around Abby, a French Bulldog — Turner doesn’t waste much time pointing his finger, er, paw, at the perpetrator.

After wagging his tail a few times and looking as innocent as possible, Turner points his paw toward his (now probably former) best friend, Abby.

“Did you make this mess, Abby?” their dog mom asks. Abby, not looking particularly happy, refuses to answer.

A video of Turner and Abby posted July 2 on YouTube has gone viral, with nearly 1.8 million views as of this morning.

It’s hilarious — well, not for Abby — but wouldn’t it be even funnier if Turner were a Rat Terrier?

Sacré Bull! For First Time in 100 Years, French Bulldogs in AKC Top 10

As usual for the past 24 years, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed in the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC) reported today.

And in second and third places, just as they were last year, are the German Shepherd and Golden Retriever.

But the big news is that for the first time in a century — sacré bull! — the French Bulldog cracked the 2014 top 10.

Also gaining in popularity is the Bulldog, which reached its highest rank (No.4) in its breed history.

“The Lab truly is America’s dog,” said AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo, “but the lovable Bulldog breeds are clamoring to dominate. Watch out for an upset next year.” Ruh roh!

Among other breeds becoming more popular over the last decade are the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, which jumped from 112th place in 2004 to 74th last year; Havanese (52nd to 25th place); Border Collie (60th to 39th); Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (118th to 96th) and the Black and Tan Coonhound (140th to 120th).

For the first time in 30 years, the Dachshund was not in the top 10, but oh-so-close to it at No. 11.

These were the 10 most popular breeds of 2014, with their 2013 ranking in parentheses. I’ve also included helpful links to national rescue organizations for these breeds. Adopt, don’t shop!

  1. Labrador Retriever (1)
  2. German Shepherd (2)
  3. Golden Retriever (3)
  4. Bulldog (5)
  5. Beagle (4)
  6. Yorkshire Terrier (6)
  7. Poodle (8)
  8. Boxer (7)
