A Double Treat for Dog Lovers: ‘Dog Bowl’ to Join ‘Puppy Bowl’ in 2018

If you’re like me, the big game you really look forward to every Super Bowl Sunday is “Puppy Bowl” on Animal Planet. Next year, we dog lovers are in for a double treat: To bring attention to older pups who need forever homes, Animal Planet is adding “Dog Bowl” to its game-day lineup.

Like “Puppy Bowl,” the players in the hour-long “Dog Bowl” will be pooches from shelters and rescues across the United States, The Wrap reports.

“‘Puppy Bowl’s’ goal is to promote animal adoption so as many animals as possible can find their forever homes,” Patrice Andrews, general manager of Animal Planet, told The Wrap. The same will be true for the network’s new competition.

“Dog Bowl” will air on Animal Planet prior to “Puppy Bowl XIV,” during the show “Road to Puppy Bowl” hosted by animal advocate and bestselling author Jill Rappaport.

The players will be “going nose to nose for touchdowns, furry fumbles and ultimately the win,” according to Animal Planet. “After the game of tail tugs and ear pulls is over, they all end up winners as they find their forever homes.”

It’s a little early, but mark your 2018 calendars for February 4. In the meantime, enjoy some of the greatest moments in “Puppy Bowl” history.

This Dog Who Can ‘Say Cheese’ on Command Won’t Be Homeless for Long

Herbert has a very charming skill: The 5-month-old Pit Bull mix can show his pearly whites when told to “Say cheese.”

Herbert is temporarily homeless, but since his video has been viewed over 10.8 million times on Facebook, it’s extremely likely he’ll have a forever home soon.

“This little rock star will be up for adoption in about two weeks,” wrote his foster mom, Amanda Robles, in a Facebook post. “He’s such a sweet boy and always wants to sleep in your lap. Now that he made u laugh, help find him a home!”

Herbert will be available later this month from PAWS Chicago. Hopefully the potential adopters who don’t end up with this particular rock star will consider another charming homeless dog from this rescue, or any other rescue or shelter across the country.

As PAWS Chicago wrote on its Facebook page, “For folks outside of the Illinois area, check your local shelter for a pet who will give you years of happiness, even if they can’t share a cheesy grin.”

Over 17,600 Pets Find Forever Homes on Clear the Shelters Day

AUG. 22, 2015 UPDATE: The total number of pets adopted on Clear the Shelters Day has risen to 19,132!

As of Saturday evening, 17,648 homeless pets have been adopted on the first-ever Clear the Shelters Day.

More than 300 shelters in about a dozen states participated in the event, which was organized in partnership with NBC-owned television stations and the Telemundo station group.

The goal, as the name implies, was to get as many pets adopted as possible. Some shelters, including those in the Chicago area, completely waived adoption fees, while others reduced the fees and/or reduced or waived spay and neuter fees.

Throughout Clear the Shelters Day on Saturday, shelters, reporters and new pet parents posted pictures of adopted pets on social media using the #ClearTheShelters hashtag.

Here are just a few of the many heartwarming posts on Twitter. (Tissue alert!)

The special, “Clear the Shelters,” hosted by Natalie Morales and featuring celebrities Cecily Strong, Sherri Shepard, Bellamy Young and Denise Richard, will air on NBC stations beginning Aug. 22. It will feature shelter pets meeting their new families and take a look at how social media is changing animal adoption.

Dog on Electronic Billboards ‘Follows’ Shoppers to Encourage Adoptions

In an advertising campaign that would make Don Draper proud, the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is using interactive billboards in a London mall to help find forever homes for its pets.

Here’s how the ingenious #LookingForYou campaign works: As shoppers approach the Westfield Stratford City mall, representatives from Battersea hand them leaflets with hidden tracking tags. When the shoppers pass the electronic billboards throughout the mall, it looks like Barley, a scruffy, soulful-eyed former Battersea resident, is following them.

“We’re very excited about the #LookingForYou campaign — as a nation of dog lovers, we’re hoping it strikes a chord with people,” said Carly Whyborn, Battersea head of operations, on its website.

“We’re using innovative technology in a way that has never been seen before, and we hope more of our abandoned animals find loving homes because of it.”

Adweek praised the campaign today, proclaiming it the “Ad of the Day.” The concept is “a simple high-tech tug at the heartstrings to remind Brits of the life-changing magic adopted pets can bring to their lives,” wrote David Gianatasio.

The campaign was designed and produced by OgilvyOne UK. Several other companies contributed to the project, including Cisper Electronics, Creation Company Films Limited, Exterion Media, Framestore, Intellifi, Kevin Mallett Photography, Mount Pleasant Studios Limited, REAL Digital International Limited, RFIDiom and Westfield Stratford City.

Here’s hoping Battersea soon finds its kennels empty, and OgilvyOne UK wins a well-deserved advertising award.

‘Cause for Paws’ Will Air Thanksgiving Night on FOX

THANKSGIVING 2015 UPDATE: This year’s show, which has been renamed again to “The All-Star Dog Rescue Celebration,” will air Thanksgiving night on FOX.

NOV. 11, 2014 UPDATE: “The Great American Dog-a-thon” has been renamed “FOX’s Cause for Paws: An All-Star Dog Spectacular.” Jane Lynch has been added as a co-host, and the celebrity lineup now includes P!ink, Kristin Chenoweth, Kathy Griffin, Sharon Osbourne and many more. Pedigree Food for Dogs will present a “Shelter Hero of the Year” Award to someone who has dedicated his or her life to making sure shelter dogs receive the love, care and resources they need to find forever homes.

In what will hopefully become as traditional as a slice of pumpkin pie after dinner, the first-ever “Great American Dog-a-Thon” will air Thanksgiving night on the FOX network as a means of finding adopters for homeless pups.

Hosted by two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank and featuring Betty White (of course!) and lots of other celebrities, the special will be a celebration of rescue dogs.

“I have long been an advocate for animal adoption and know first-hand the immense joy a shelter animal brings to our lives,” Swank said in a press release.

“Yet, every year more than 4 million animals are euthanized because of overcrowding in shelters. We are so fortunate to have an animal advocate in the FOX network that not only sees the need for more awareness surrounding this issue, but is willing to set aside a two-hour block for this important cause. This partnership will change the path of a soul for thousands of animals looking for their forever home.”

Along with Swank and White, other stars scheduled to introduce adoptable dogs include Scarlett Johansson, Josh Duhamel, Miranda Lambert, Kristen Bell, Fergie, Paula Abdul, LeAnn Rimes, Kesha and Carrie Ann Inaba.

Awards will be presented in categories such as Cutest Puppy, Best Celebrity/Dog Lookalike, Guiltiest Dog, Best Licker, Smartest Dog and Best Viral Dog Video. There will be musical tributes to hero dogs as well as segments honoring people who rescue animals in need.

The show will give viewers the opportunity to make a donation to raise funds for rescue organizations. Information about how to adopt dogs in the viewers’ local areas will also be provided.

“The Great American Dog-a-Thon” starts at 8 p.m. ET/PT on November 27.
