Pet Owners Use Poop to Prank ‘Porch Pirates’

Here come the holidays, which means front porches are filled with packages delivered by UPS, FedEx and Amazon. These packages are prime targets for thieves known as “porch pirates.”

Some pet owners are keeping these thieves away by filling Amazon and other boxes with dog poop, and then placing them on their porches.

Leaving Las Vegas…with a Box of Dog Poop

As Eric Bardo of Las Vegas was picking up after his big dog last year, he got the idea to put the poop in a Priority Mail box and leave it on his porch. Four days later, a young thief took the B.M. bait. Surveillance cameras captured videos of a boy snatching the poop package and then running down the street with an accomplice.

Bardo decided not to report the crime to police. “I didn’t want to call them and say somebody stole a box of poop off my front porch,” he told KTNV.

Apparently Bardo was a turd trendsetter. This year another Vegas resident, Eric Snow, did the same thing after packages were being stolen in his neighborhood.

He filled a box with what he called “reprocessed dog chow” from his 95-pound German shepherd, Heidi, and put it on his front porch. A security camera showed two men pulling up in a green car and snatching the nasty package.

Great Surprise from a Great Dane

Earlier this month in Riverside, Calif., Mikey Zaremba filled a box with poop collected during his Great Dane’s birthday party with several other dogs. Just like those Vegas dog dads, he left it on his front porch.

As you can imagine, Daniel Aldama, the thief who stole the package, got a really big surprise.

“He dropped it as soon as he found out,” Ronel Newton of the Riverside Police Department told CBS Los Angeles. “He didn’t want nothing to do with it and kept on riding.” Aldama was arrested and is facing charges.

Tips for Avoiding Porch Pirates

If leaving your pet’s poop in a box on your porch doesn’t appeal to you, here are some other steps you can take to avoid having your packages stolen.

  • For FedEx deliveries, you can request a signature, schedule a delivery or have the package sent elsewhere, such as to your office or to a family member or neighbor who’s home during the day.
  • You can have items ordered from Amazon delivered to an Amazon Locker. These self-service delivery locations are available in hundreds of places across the country. You’ll get an email when your package has been delivered and will have three business days to pick it up. (Another cool tip: You can also use Amazon Locker to return items purchased on Amazon.)

Las Vegas Man Uses Dog Poop to Foil Package Thieves

‘Tis the season for delivered packages to be left on front porches — and, increasingly, to be taken away by thieves.

That’s what kept happening to Eric Bardo of Las Vegas. Last week, perhaps as he was picking up after his big dog, he decided to do something about it.

“One day I kind of just thought about cleaning up the poop and putting it in a box and that’s what I did,” Bardo told KTNV. “I put it in there, taped it up and wrote the address on it.”

The Priority Mail box sat on Bardo’s front porch from Sunday until Thursday, when a thief finally took the B.M. bait, so to speak. Surveillance cameras captured videos of a boy snatching the poop package and then running down the street with an accomplice.

Unfortunately, there is no video of the young thief’s reaction when he opened the box.

Bardo decided not to report the crime to police. “I didn’t want to call them and say somebody stole a box of poop off my front porch,” he told KTNV.

“Hopefully they don’t do it again and they learn their lesson.”

After airing this story, KTNV heard from viewers who said they’d considered doing the same thing as Bardo, but never went through with it. This prank changed their minds.

San Diego Man Covers Lawn with Chocolate Chips to Keep Dogs Away

Sure, it’s aggravating when irresponsible dog owners allow their pooches to poop on your front lawn. Again and again and again.

But is that any reason to cover your lawn with something that’s potentially poisonous to dogs?

John Robinson of San Diego thought so. Last Friday, he sprinkled several pounds of chocolate chips over his front yard.

Chocolate, as you should know, can be poisonous for dogs — especially darker chocolate and smaller dogs.

Robinson told NBC 7 he had previously used signs warning people not to let their dogs poop on his lawn, to no avail.

“People disrespect my yard,” he said. “I’m tired of the stuff.”

The idea he came up with seems to be working. He said people walking their dogs are now crossing the street to avoid his house.

Local dog mom Sarah Fisher has been using social media to warn pet parents about the chocolate chips on Robinson’s lawn.

“If he is doing this – which is like an animal genocide, pretty much – he’s putting it out for animals to ingest and get sick,” she told NBC 7.

Residents in Robinson’s North Park neighborhood called San Diego County Animal Control to complain. Its deputy director, Dan DeSousa, told NBC 7 the case is currently being investigated by both animal control and the San Diego Police Department.

Robinson claimed he doesn’t believe chocolate is harmful for dogs. (Then why did he cover his front lawn with it?)  He told NBC 7 he plans to mow the lawn soon to get rid of the chocolate chips — although city officials may order him to do it sooner.

Ingenious or Evil?

More than 100 comments have been left on the NBC 7 story. I was surprised that many people seem to think Robinson’s method of deterring dogs is ingenious, not evil.

“Let me get this straight. Pet owners won’t be considerate of a homeowner’s property, so he puts chocolate chips on HIS OWN FRONT YARD as a deterrent,” wrote Les Ciapponi. “Then some of these same irresponsible pet owners file a complaint. OK this is crazy. It’s his property! Can’t these people control their pets? I’m sorry, these pet owners who filed a complaint are WHACK!”

Desi Woodburn agreed. “I think his intention is to scare the dog owners away from his yard, which he did,” she wrote. “It’s his own yard, so what’s the big deal? Responsible dog owners keep their dogs on a leash when out and about. Then again, responsible dog owners should be picking up after their pet.”

I agree with those who thought what Robinson did was wrong, particularly since it is harmful to the innocent dogs rather than their irresponsible owners.

“Why make the dogs suffer painfully and possibly die because they crapped on the lawn?” wrote Shelley Sloane. “Why not go after the owners rather than setting it up so any dog that goes by has the possibility of eating this and having health issues because of it?”

Jordan Smith wrote, “I get what he’s doing and I do feel he has a right to take action against this, but the dogs shouldn’t suffer for the irresponsibility of the owner. Dogs don’t know not to poop in a yard, nor are they aware that chocolate is bad for them.”
