Border Collie Mix Thrown from Idaho Car Wreck Found…Herding Sheep

During a car crash on an Idaho street Sunday morning, a 2-year-old Border Collie/Heeler mix named Tillie was thrown from one of the vehicles involved. She ran off into a field — and then seemed to disappear.

The Idaho State Police (ISP) issued a news release asking for witnesses to the wreck and urging everyone in the area to keep an eye out for Tilly.

“Tilly has no tail, a dark-colored face, weighs approximately 70 pounds, and was wearing a multi-colored plaid and tan-colored collar with a name tag containing the owner’s contact information,” the news release said. “Tilly’s family is from Hayden and is doing all they can to find the dog.”

Two days later, Tilly was discovered doing what Border Collies like to do: She had found her way to a farm and was herding the sheep there.

Although she lost some weight and was pretty thirsty, Tilly’s owner said the lucky dog was otherwise fine, KHQ reports.

However, as someone commented on the KHQ Local News Facebook page, “Once a Border Collie/Heeler mix has had a taste of sheep herding, he/she will never be satisfied with nipping at the feet of toddlers again.” True.

Border Collie Detects Possible Survivor One Month after Beirut Explosion

One month after an explosion in Beirut injured thousands and claimed over 100 lives, a 5-year-old Border Collie named Flash led rescuers to someone who may have miraculously survived for 30 days in a collapsed building.

Flash is a sniffer dog who was working with TOPOS, a search-and-rescue team dispatched to Beirut from Chile. He is trained to find bodies and alert his team. As Flash and his human team members walked the streets in Beirut’s historic Mar Mikhail district yesterday, Flash suddenly rushed over to some rubble, the Associated Press reports.

Using audio equipment, TOPOS detected what sounded like a pulse of 18 to 19 beats per minute. The rescue team has used cranes, shovels and their bare hands to dig through the rubble in their efforts to reach the possible survivor. As of this morning, the pulse has dropped to seven beats per minute, and the rescue team continues to try to find its source.

Francisco Lermanda, the head of the rescue team, told local TV station Al Jadeed this morning that he couldn’t confirm whether there was a living or dead person under the rubble, and the rescue work would go on.

“Ninety-nine percent there isn’t anything, but even if there is less than 1 percent hope, we should keep on looking,” Youssef Malah, a civil defense worker, told Al Jadeed yesterday.

Flash has deservedly become a social media superhero. Some residents of Beirut posted that Flash cares more about Lebanese people than their own government does. The explosion was caused by about 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate that was unsafely stored at Beirut’s port.

Baaa-d Job? Border Collie Herder-in-Training Leads Sheep into House

Rocky, a seven-month-old Border Collie puppy, is just getting his paws wet at the art of herding sheep.

So perhaps his owner, Rosalyn Edwards of Devon, England, shouldn’t have been too surprised at what she found inside her home late last month.

“I was in the kitchen and heard a noise,” Edwards told The Telegraph. “I turned around and the sheep were just standing there. There were about nine of them.”

The sight of all those sheep inside her house was pretty hilarious, but the mess they made? Not so much. “There was quite a lot of wee, poo and mud everywhere,” Edwards said. “It took me a little while to clean it all up.”

How did the sheep end up inside her house? Edwards, her husband and her son had gone out into a field, inadvertently leaving a gate open behind them. Being a super smart Border Collie, young Rocky quickly took advantage of the situation and led the sheep into the house through a back door.

Thank goodness for smart phones — Edwards was able to record the video below of the sheep inside her house, which has been viewed more than 92,000 times on Facebook.

Edwards put her children in another room, and she and her husband were able to successfully shoo the sheep out the front door.

As for Rocky, he was very pleased with himself, Edwards said. After all, how many herding dogs have the skills to lead sheep inside houses?

“He brought a whole new meaning to ‘bringing the sheep home,’” she told The Telegraph.

The Sweetest Trick: Border Collie Hugs Her German Shepherd BFF [Video]

Lottie, a 2-year-old Border Collie from Ontario, Canada, is “very much a normal dog,” according to her dog mom, Taylor Duguay.

“Lottie isn’t perfect,” Duguay told ABC News. “I’ll be the first to admit she’s like every other dog. She barks when someone comes to the door, she’s chewed a roll of paper towels and she likes spending her days taking naps.”

But there’s one special thing Lottie can do that a lot of other dogs probably cannot: She can hug her best friend, a 2-year-old German Shepherd named Grizzly.

Although Duquay has taught Lottie more than 250 tricks, hugging Grizzly was not one of them. The Border Collie, who competes in dog sports like Frisbee and dock diving, spontaneously started doing it.

“At first Grizzly wasn’t sure what was going on,” Duquay told the Daily Mail. “Now when I ask Lottie who her best friend is, you can even catch Grizzly getting ready for the hug and leaning into her.”

Duguay adopted Lottie when she was 4 months old. A year later, she rescued Grizzly from the streets when the German Shepherd was just a 7-week-old puppy.

“As far as their relationship together, it’s something out of a storybook,” Duquay told the Daily Mail. “Lottie is convinced Grizzly is her own pup. From day one she treated him with love and care.”

Last week, Duquay posted a video on Vine of Lottie hugging Grizzly, with the description, “Who’s your best friend?” As of this afternoon, it’s been viewed by nearly 38 million people.

“Lottie has a knack for doing tricks and she loves nothing more than performing for crowds,” Duguay told ABC News. “In my eyes, Lottie is a super dog.”

Super duper!

Stray Border Collie Prevents Girl from Being Hit by Truck

As a group of children played alongside a street in Oklahoma City, a little girl stepped off the curb. A stray Border Collie who’s been nicknamed “Angel” darted in front of her, stopping the girl in her tracks.

Angel had seen what the little girl did not: a truck speeding toward her. The truck clipped Angel, fracturing his leg.

“He really was a watchdog,” Charles Saxton, who witnessed Angel’s heroic deed, told KOCO. “That truck came speeding down. They always do. He saved her life. Saved her from getting hit. I don’t know if it would have killed the girl or not, but it mangled the dog pretty bad.”

Another witness, Alfredo Carrasco, said Angel had been hanging around the area for about three weeks. He and other neighbors fed him.

“It just showed up,” he told KOCO. “Real pretty dog, black and white. I don’t know who it belongs to, but he was real friendly.”

Angel is now being cared for by the Oklahoma City (OKC) Animal Welfare Department. A generous veterinarian has offered to pay for the surgery needed on the Border Collie’s leg, and according to the OKC Animal Welfare Department’s Facebook page, Angel has already been adopted and will be going to his new forever home today.

“It really shows the power of the human-animal relationship,” the department’s superintendent, Julie Bank, told KOCO. “It shows how much animals are really in tune to what we’re all about. Angel really is a hero dog that saved a bunch of kids.”
