Clear the Shelters Event August 19 Will Hopefully Do Just That

UPDATE: Over 75,000 pets were adopted on Clear the Shelters day this year — 25,000 more than last year!

If you or anyone you know wants to adopt a new furry family member, be aware that Aug. 19 is the third annual Clear the Shelters Day. During this event, hundreds of animal shelters across the country are lowering their adoption fees or dropping them altogether. (But, rest assured, most of these shelters will still be screening potential adopters.)

The goal, as the name implies, is to get as many pets adopted as possible. The previous two Clear the Shelters events were hugely successful. More than 73,000 dogs and cats have found forever homes on this special day since 2015, including over 19,000 in 2015 and over 50,000 in 2016. Hopefully the number of adoptions will double again this year.

Among the lucky dogs who found homes last year were Rose, a Husky with a neurological syndrome who had traveled from Turkey to a shelter in New York, and Tootsie, a senior Shih-Tzu with one eye who was adopted by a family from Chicago.

There’s really nothing better than seeing a sign like this on an animal shelter’s door.

The Clear the Shelters initiative is spearheaded by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. For the second year in a row, VIP Petcare is co-sponsoring the event and donating more than $200 of preventive veterinary services to every pet that’s adopted. Petco is also a sponsor, and will provide all adopters with free “Welcome to the Family” packets that include information and pet supply coupons.

To see if a shelter near you is participating, check the map on the Clear the Shelters website. For updates about this event, follow the #ClearTheShelters and #LoveMyPet hashtags on social media.

“Clear the Shelters,” a 30-minute TV special hosted by Katie Lee and Beth Stern, will start airing Aug. 25 on NBC stations.

And before you adopt, I have some important tips for you. Good luck!

Over 17,600 Pets Find Forever Homes on Clear the Shelters Day

AUG. 22, 2015 UPDATE: The total number of pets adopted on Clear the Shelters Day has risen to 19,132!

As of Saturday evening, 17,648 homeless pets have been adopted on the first-ever Clear the Shelters Day.

More than 300 shelters in about a dozen states participated in the event, which was organized in partnership with NBC-owned television stations and the Telemundo station group.

The goal, as the name implies, was to get as many pets adopted as possible. Some shelters, including those in the Chicago area, completely waived adoption fees, while others reduced the fees and/or reduced or waived spay and neuter fees.

Throughout Clear the Shelters Day on Saturday, shelters, reporters and new pet parents posted pictures of adopted pets on social media using the #ClearTheShelters hashtag.

Here are just a few of the many heartwarming posts on Twitter. (Tissue alert!)

The special, “Clear the Shelters,” hosted by Natalie Morales and featuring celebrities Cecily Strong, Sherri Shepard, Bellamy Young and Denise Richard, will air on NBC stations beginning Aug. 22. It will feature shelter pets meeting their new families and take a look at how social media is changing animal adoption.

‘Marley & Me’ May Become an NBC Series

Get out those hankies…week after week after week, perhaps.

NBC has ordered a pilot for a TV series based on the heart-tugging book and movie, “Marley & Me,” according to Deadline Hollywood. The show will actually be a sequel to the story by John Grogan, following his family’s adventures A.M. (After Marley), when they take in an equally rascally stray puppy. His name? Marley, of course.

(This is not to be confused with “Marley & Me: The Puppy Years,” the 2011 prequel about the original Marley as a puppy. Who talked.)

If it’s picked up for a series, “Marley & Me” will focus on John and Jenny Grogan (portrayed by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston in the movie) and their three kids, who return to Florida so the dog dad can resume his newspaper column.

David Frankel, director of “Marley & Me,” will also direct the TV pilot. It’s being written by Emmy winner Jenny Bicks, who also wrote for “Sex and The City” (including the episode, “Old Dogs, New Dicks,” which was not, er, actually about old dogs.) The cast of “Marley & Me” has not yet been announced.

“Marley & Me” grossed a whopping $243 million dollars at the box office in 2008. (Tissue manufacturers also probably did very well that year.)

Will the TV version be as popular? (“The original Marley must be rolling over in his grave,” wrote one skeptical commenter on the Deadline Hollywood story.) It remains to be seen whether Marley will be able to give Lassie a run for her money as the most popular TV dog ever.
